光合作用做為地球上最重要的化學反應，一直是國際科研界的研究熱點，涵蓋了植物生理、生態、農業科學、林業科學、分子生物學、藻類生理生態、水生生物學、海洋生態學、生物能源、仿生學等等數十個研究領域。由國際光合作用學會（ISPR）組織的每三年一屆的“國際光合作用大會”歷來是國際光合作用屆的一大盛事，全球各地的科研人員都會踴躍參加，就最新的研究成果、技術和應用進行交流。
經過中國學者的努力，第15屆國際光合作用大會將于2010年8月22－27日在北京友誼賓館召開。這是國際光合作用大會第一次在中國召開！
第15屆國際光合作用大會的主辦單位為中國科學院植物研究所和國際光合作用學會，會議主題為“Photosynthesis research for food, fuel and the future”。
本次大會除了在北京設有主會場外，還分別在新加坡南陽理工大學（8月18－20日）和南開大學（8月19－22日）設有衛星會場，兩個衛星會場的主題分別為“Molecular Basis of Photosynthetic Energy and Electron Transfer and Related Respiratory Processes”和“Antenna and reaction centers”。
